Woman Stabbed in Birmingham Bus Stop Attack Dies
A woman stabbed repeatedly in the neck in an unprovoked attack near a bus shelter within Birmingham has died, police have confirmed.
The victim, who was 34, came under attack in Smallbrook Queensway, just outside the Bullring shopping centre, just prior to 9 PM GMT on Friday, according to police statements.
The suspect, twenty-one, appeared before Birmingham court Monday morning, facing charges for the violent incident.
He was previously accused with attempted murder but following the victim's passing charges were upgraded to murder.
Police Response
Authorities stated officers would be in the downtown area through Monday to offer reassurance, and investigators were supporting the woman's family.
Investigators are requesting any eyewitnesses who may have seen the accused, who is described as a Black British national, and is believed to have been wearing an all-grey tracksuit, black hat, athletic shoes with a backpack.
Incident Location
The stabbing happened near the Bullring shopping centre, opposite primary access point of New Street railway station.
Police said they classified it as a random violent act and Det Insp James Nix said efforts continue to determine why it happened.
Witness Accounts
An area worker, who works nearby, described paramedic and police activity after completing her shift at about 22:00 on Friday.
She characterized the location as extremely disorderly, and said co-workers reported hearing loud disturbances around 9 PM.
"Many my colleagues take public transport, ride the tramline... our safety is at risk fundamentally, in the downtown area."
Ashley Birks, 25, from Stoke-on-Trent, mentioned visiting the city quite frequently visiting his partner resident there, expressing concern about what had happened.
"It makes me worried about my partner," he said.
"She lacks transportation employed at all of the big music venues... and to think something completely unprovoked [happened], you know, it's horrible."
